If only everyone thought this way

Said by a six year old girl to me, in response to the information that we had moved from the United States:

"United States? I don't know what that is. Is it like a really, really tall building?"

Okay, that's really, really funny. I mean that's one of those things that just gets funnier the more I think about it.

Your last post, Beautiful Dreamer, gave me goosebumps Dawn. The stories about your dad. Wow!

As for this post.... That is cracking me up. I can see a 6-year-old girl looking up at you, crinking her nose as she asks that question...

That is funny! My daughter teaches 3rd grade and she told them that she used to live in Ohio...they wanted to know if" Ohio is in the United States....Is Kenya in the United Sates? Is Texas? I was born in Texas".....

funny!

Perhaps I am just missing my funny bone today, but I actually find this quite sad.

I mean my daughter is 7 but she knows what Canada is (and where), as well as Mexico, and several other countries.

I understand that kids are not going to know all of the countries in the world, but sheesh.

The odd Thing, Jay, for me is the sensation that the US is SO big, SO ever present in every part of life, so much the Focal point of ALL culture/debate/discussion...and then to be reminded that we aren't.

It was one of those moments when I was a little astonished at my own America-centric viewpoint of the world. I mean, Doesn't EVERYONE know about America?

Not if it isn't important to them...and to this six year old? Getting to see the penguins at the Biodome was MUCH higher on her list of important cultural touchstones!

Perhaps Penguins vs. America poses the same conundrum as Pirates vs. Ninjas?
