Crossing Over

Monday, June 05, 2006

During Emily's ballet class on Saturday, I heard my phone ring.

Hm. That's odd.

Then I realized that it wasn't my phone ringing, but the 16 year old assistant teacher's phone.

We share the same ring tone. Sean Paul's "Temperature".

I fear I have crossed over from "hip mom who enjoys the music of today" into the realm of "sad old adult trying to remain hip".

At least you aren't still using one of the standard rings that come with the phone for free. I don't even know who Sean Paul is, which is truly old and sad.

My cell phone is so old, "Ode to Joy" is as hip as I can get.

But you know what? As long as you truly dig the music and are not actually trying to impress anyone, you will never be sad. You'll just be genuinely hip. Because people who are really truly hip aren't trying to get the approval of silly kids, they're just doing what they do.

Yeah. I'm too lazy to even KNOW what the ring on mine is...

You're a step ahead of me. I haven't even changed my ring tone. In fact (and this is quite embarrasing and perhaps unbelievable but TRUE nonetheless), I just got my first cell phone this year. So don't worry. There is at least one person out there who is less hip than you. :)

I don't even have a cell phone- how's THAT for uncool!

Hey, MOTR, I just got my first cell phone this year, too!

Dawn, does it make me old and uncool far beyond my years that I haven't even heard the song of which you speak?

Yeah, it's true. And I'm only nine years older than that assistant teacher . . .

Dude, you're still hip. And like E. said. If you're not trying to impress anyone and you just like what you like, then that'll never be sad.

My ringtone is the song the band kids do with kazoos on the bus at the beginning of Sixteen Candles. How's that for passe? But I don't care. That's one of my favorite movies and my ringtone is kind of an inside joke that only I and one other person get.

"Temperature" is a cool song, yo. No need to belittle your choice based on your age.

Just yesterday I heard that Kelly Clarkson tix. were going on sale and I thought, "man, I wouldn't mind going to that." that...THAT is a little sad. realizing that much, I continued, "I wonder if I can take sarah (age 3.5) to make it look like I am taking HER."

screw it- we like what we like. Make no apologies!

(so...uh, anyone wanna go to kelly Clarkson with me??)

Sean Paul who? And I've never had anything but the standard issue rings that come with my phone. At least you made it to hip in the first place.

Standard ring tone here too, although I think I may steal Beth's idea (but then I would sing along to my ring tone, which is just sad).

I just switched mine to Breathe (2 am) by Anna Nalick - I noticed you had that on The Gimlet Eye as "listening to" - I've loved that song for quite awhile - plus it's good advice :-)

So, am I hip? or just old and trying to look hip? :-)
